Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and every year it arrives with a wave of door-knockers offering last-minute trims. Here is the honest version instead: by the time a storm has a name, the useful window closed months ago. What protects a tree in hurricane winds is good structure — and structure is built in the dormant season, not the forecast cone.

Healthy, well-structured trees survive hurricanes remarkably well — Central Florida's live oaks have been doing it for centuries. The trees that come down usually had a problem long before the storm did. These are the failure modes we see over and over after a storm passes through the greater Orlando area:

Rot columns from old topping wounds, or root and butt decay like Ganoderma. The outside can look fine while the wood doing the holding is gone. This is what risk assessments exist to find.
When the interior branches are stripped out, all the weight and sail area concentrates at the branch tips. The limbs whip harder in wind instead of dampening it — the pruning made the tree worse.
Central Florida hurricanes arrive on top of the summer wet season. Days of rain loosen sandy soil around the root plate, and then hours of sustained wind lever against it. Whole healthy-looking trees tip at the roots.
Palms stripped to a tuft are starved, not protected. The canopy a palm keeps is what feeds it, and the new spear growth on an over-cut palm is weaker in exactly the winds it was supposedly prepared for.
Notice the pattern: two of the five are caused by bad pruning. UF/IFAS studies of tree damage after Florida's hurricanes consistently found that well-structured, properly pruned trees held up better than topped, over-thinned, or neglected ones. Preparation is real — it just looks nothing like the panic trims sold in June.
Storm readiness in Central Florida follows the same calendar every year. Here is the whole cycle:
This is when hurricane prep actually happens. Trees are dormant, defects are easy to see, and there is time for new growth to harden off before summer. ANSI A300 structural pruning — crown cleaning, reduction of over-extended limbs, correcting weak architecture in young trees — is the single most effective thing you can do. From here on, major pruning does more harm than good — large fresh cuts and a stressed canopy are the opposite of storm-ready. What still makes sense: removing deadwood whenever you spot it, clearing loose debris and hangers, and keeping an eye on anything the spring walk flagged. If you missed the window, don't panic-prune — a targeted deadwood pass beats a rushed canopy job every time.

Assume every downed line is live and stay away from anything touching one — call 911 for sparking or burning lines. Keep people out of rooms under a tree on the roof. Photograph the damage before anything is moved. Then triage: trees on structures first, blocked access second, leaners third. Most storm-prep damage is self-inflicted — sold to homeowners as protection. Four things to refuse, no matter who offers them:
Cutting major limbs back to stubs. ANSI A300 prohibits it. The regrowth is fast, weakly attached, and prone to snapping — a topped tree is more dangerous in the next storm, and often dying on top of it.
Stripping a palm to a bare tuft starves it and weakens the new growth. UF/IFAS guidance is clear: remove only dead or dying fronds. A full, green canopy is a healthy palm's storm protection, not its liability.
Gutting the interior of the canopy so limbs look "cleaned out." It shifts all the weight and wind load to the branch tips, where limbs whip and break instead of dampening the wind.
A bent, hung, or pinned limb stores energy like a loaded spring, and it releases without warning. Anything under tension — or anywhere near a line — belongs to trained crews working to the ANSI Z133 safety standard, not a weekend and a rented saw.
Every policy differs, but Florida homeowners policies follow a consistent pattern with storm-felled trees:

The structural pruning window in Central Florida is roughly January through March, while trees are dormant and defects are easy to see — with April and May as the last practical window for an arborist inspection and any remaining corrective work. Once hurricane season opens June 1, major pruning does more harm than good: fresh large cuts and a stressed canopy are the opposite of storm-ready. Dead or broken wood is the exception — remove it whenever you find it.
No. A "hurricane cut" — stripping a palm down to a small tuft of upright fronds — makes a palm more likely to fail in a storm, not less. Palms cannot heal cuts or rebuild reserves the way hardwoods can, so an over-stripped canopy starves the palm and weakens the new growth that has to survive the wind. UF/IFAS guidance is to remove only dead or dying fronds. Sacred Tree Service does not perform hurricane cuts, in any season.
In Central Florida, the trees most likely to fail in hurricane winds are the ones with pre-existing structural problems: co-dominant trunks with included bark, internal decay (often from old topping cuts or root rot like Ganoderma), lion-tailed or over-lifted canopies, and recently hurricane-cut palms. Fast-growing, weak-wooded species — laurel oak, water oak, camphor — fail more often than live oaks, and any tree standing in saturated soil can go over at the roots. Most of these problems are visible to an arborist months before the season starts.
Under most Florida homeowners policies: if the tree hits an insured structure (house, garage, fence), removal from the structure and repair of the structure are usually covered. A tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything is usually not covered. And if a neighbor’s tree lands on your property, it is your policy that pays — not theirs — in almost every Florida policy. The week before a storm is for small, safe tasks — not pruning. Secure or store loose outdoor furniture and yard items, clear dead branches and debris you can reach from the ground, and photograph your trees and structures for insurance. Do not hire anyone offering a same-week "quick trim," especially with climbing spikes — rushed cuts wound trees and remove nothing that matters in hurricane winds.
